Meet the Volunteer: Alexandra Axinescu
Name: Alexandra Axinescu.
I’m originally from Romania and moved to Switzerland a few years ago. I’m a lover of the outdoors and a forever-curious human, happiest when I’m exploring something new, whether it’s a trail, a sport, or a great book I can disappear into for hours.
What personal experiences drew you to charity work?
I grew up watching my parents quietly help others by donating clothes I had outgrown, or passing items along to families who needed them, just as family friends would pass things on to us when their children no longer needed them. It wasn’t about need as much as it was about community and reusing thoughtfully. I’ve been volunteering for over 20 years across different causes, be it environmental projects, social care initiatives, women-focused programs, and for the past year and a half, with Zharity. Volunteering has always been my way of giving back in whatever ways I can, and has become a constant in my life no matter where I’ve lived.
How did you get involved with Zharity?
When I first moved to Zurich I was looking for English-speaking volunteering opportunities, and as luck would have it, the company I work for partnered with Zharity for a kit-making event. After that first experience, the rest was history. I loved the mission, the energy, and the people, so here I am.
What projects are you currently working on?
I co-led the last Zharity raffle which helps us raise funds to support the Verein’s activities. This year I look forward to volunteering for the Essen für Alle activities that Zharity is supporting, and connecting more with the community and the partners we support.
